They are incredibly versatile and the perfect beginner project. Download the pattern and follow the instructions to make the pants - and you will be good to go in an hour.

My pattern is a female adaptation of an Indian folk garment for men (as it happened to trousers in general ages ago).

Dhoti definition by Google: "A garment worn by male Hindus, consisting of a piece of material tied around the waist and extending to cover most of the legs."

Dhoti definition by Wikipedia: "The dhoti, also known as panche, vesti, dhuti, mardani, chaadra, dhotar or panchey, is a type of sarong that outwardly resembles trousers. It is a lower garment forming part of the national or ethnic costume for men in the Indian subcontinent. The dhoti is fashioned out of a rectangular piece of unstitched cloth, usually around 4.5 metres (15 ft) long, wrapped around the waist and the legs and knotted either in the front or the back."

Dhotis come in plain or solid colours, silk dhotis with embroidered borders are considered to be formal wear.

Sizes: S-M-L-XL-2XL-3XL (few sizes plus to the Body Measurements Guide)

The Plus-size measurements for the Bust/Waist/Hips would be as following:

  • 2XL: 120/103/126 cm (the last on the chart);
  • 3XL: 128/113/134 cm

MATERIALS: Soft draping knit/jersey or woven fabrics.
Size S: 140x235cm / 55"x93"
Size 3XL: 150x345cm / 59"x136"

To find out the AMOUNT for a particular FABRIC in your size, you might like taking your pattern to the fabric shop – their assistants are always happy to help.

Otherwise, do it yourself:

  • stretch a flat bed-sheet on a table or floor;
  • fold it to the width of the material you plan to use;
  • arrange ALL pattern pieces paying attention to the grainline desired-directions and seam allowances;
  • measure the length you have got.
